  • How Does It Work?

At its core, an incremental encoder consists of a rotating disk (or scale) with alternating opaque and transparent segments, a light source (LED), and a photodetector array. As the disk spins, the light passes through the transparent segments and hits the photodetectors, generating electrical pulses.

  1. Signal Generation:** The encoder outputs two square wave signals, typically labeled A and B, which are 90 degrees out of phase. These are known as quadrature signals.
  2. Direction Detection:** By analyzing the phase difference between A and B signals, the system determines the direction of rotation.
  3. -Counting Pulses:** The number of pulses corresponds to the amount of movement. Counting these pulses allows the system to measure how far the shaft has turned.
